vs. Vermillion Voles: July 6, 2019
The Vermilion gained a split of the season series with the White River BBC on Saturday, defeating the men in wool, 16-14, at Strawtown Koteewi Park. It was the fifth consecutive match played under 1886 National League rules for WR who now stand 2-3 on the 2019 campaign. The first three innings featured solid defence and fine pitching as WR plated the lone run. The Voles bats came alive over the following four innings scoring 14 times and leading 12-1 going into the bottom of the sixth. WR countered with several fine offensive innings of their own, pushing home 5 safeties in the sixth and 3 more in the seventh to set up a show down going into the final half frame trailing 16-9. After Mountain and Calliope each reached to start the WR ninth, the game was halted 20 minutes by a gusty downpour. Once the match resumed, 5 runners crossed the plate and the winning run came to bat before the rally was stifled. The leading WR hitters for the day included Calliope (5-for-5 with a double), Mountain and Moose (each 4-for-5). Stilts and Scooter both contributed a double while Calliope, Lipadip and Buzz (the latter two playing-in from the Blues) each tallied 3 runs. Four hurlers saw action lead by Scooter with 4 IP, but of particular note was Sarge's 5 pitch effort to retire the side in the Voles eighth inning. Special thanks go to Whoop-la for serving as arbiter for the match; to those who contributed food and drink for the post-game meal; and to Scooter's boss, Christy, at the park for allowing us to eat inside after a second monsoon arrived just after completion of the game.
